The origination of chess among the Historians is believed to be from ancient India in Sindh, where it was called Chaturanga. The earliest mention of Chaturanga appears in the Hindu-Sanskrit epic called Mahabharata which was written in Circa 500BC. Thereafter, the Persians created a modern version of the game. Chess eventually spread to Europe and as far as Japan, generating variants as it expanded across the East and West.
Chess is an abstract strategy board game played amongst two players. Modern chess sets consist of 32 pieces, 16 black and 16 white placed on a board comprising of 64 squares of alternating color, light and dark. Each player's pieces comprise of eight pawns, two knights, two bishops, two rooks and pair of King and Queen. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent. This occurs when the opponent's king is 'captured' and no other move can be made to prevent it.
Throughout the era, the style of chess has become a very important consideration of the game. There has been many variations particularly in designs of chess pieces. The Staunton chess set is probably the most popular in the world and the one used in many international tournaments. There are also many more ornately designed chess pieces in various themes. Royal Selangor's Camelot chess set for example is based on the medieval times of the legendary King Arthur and his knights around the table.
Equally popular are the Lord of The Rings themed chess sets. Titled "The War of The Rings", this chess set uniquely consists of seven pieces of Orcs and one piece of Gollum which makes up the pawns on the evil side. A game of chess with this set is considered a 'warfare' between the 'good' and the 'evil' side.
The shot glasses chess set are made up of shot glasses. The chess pieces are not only used to play chess but can also be used to serve drinks. Different colored drinks are poured into these shot glasses to differentiate the two sides. One may also drink from each piece that he captures during the game, making it a fun and merry game. Also available are the miniature goblets chess sets which are made up of character goblets from the Lord of The Rings range. These goblets are half the size of the original ones, made to fit onto the chess board. Similarly, both sides are differentiated with different colored drinks.
Other variants of chess set by Royal Selangor include the Chinese chess set. Judging by its different rules, the Chinese chess is closely related to the military strategists in ancient China. This game is believed to have been first played by the first emperor of Chow Dynasty in China which dated back to Circa 1120BC.
