It is the male pheasant which sports the distinctive white ring about its neck, with a long and pointed tail. The female is mainly a buff brown without the white ring about its neck. The Ring necked pheasant is native to China and East Asia and, after being successfully introduced to other parts of the world, has gained popularity as a game bird.
