Craig Skinner
Sales Director, Royal Selangor United Kingdom
Bringing Up Father
This UK-based jovial father of two joined Royal Selangor as the Sales Director in 2018. He leads a great sales team in developing relationships and growing sales on the retail and wholesale trade throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland and the European marketplaces. He also manages the operations of the King’s Road retail store in London.
When asked what drew him to the brand, he explains, “Royal Selangor has a superb range of products ranging from barware, nursery, collaborations with museums, to collectibles. All of which sell incredibly well throughout our marketplaces.”
As a working father, he faces his fair share of challenges juggling work and family. His wife, Maria, has been his greatest support in ensuring that he is a good dad to his two daughters, Jessica and Charlotte.
Craig adds, “I was very lucky that I have a fantastic wife who did a brilliant job making sure they were always happy and healthy, also making sure she told me in advance when events were taking place so I could manage my diary if I needed to take time off ."
"From the second our daughters were born I realised that I would do anything for them. That includes being present at every moment of their lives. We always went everywhere as a family, eating together as much as possible round the table, even when they were very young. It created a strong bond between us.”
Craig has also been a foster carer for 10 years.
“My daughters are working and my wife and I felt we were in a good position to make a difference to other children’s lives. We have looked after 6 children during this time before they move onto become adopted or move into long term care, ages have ranged from 12 months to 17 years old,” he explains.
For Craig, the most wonderful thing about fostering is watching the children grow up and blossom into independent adults.
He adds, “Seeing the children smiling, improving and doing well at school, far outweighs the more difficult times. Our current placement, who has been with us for 4 years has done exceptionally well. She has just started an apprenticeship training scheme before she moves to the next step in her life, hopefully a very well-balanced young lady.”
Looking at his daughters and foster children, he sees fatherhood as a journey of learning and reflection. “When your children are younger, you can be there for them helping with the decisions they make. As they grow older, you just need to be there for them, offering advice if needed, but allowing them to make their own decisions. You just have to hope that as a parent you have empowered them to have the knowledge and confidence to take the right road,” says Craig.
To fathers everywhere, Royal Selangor salutes the many roles you play in your children’s lives — mentor, protector and hero.
