A stylish greeting card featuring a muka bantal replicated in fine pewter foil inset into a wide silvery border.
The silver original is in the collection of the Muzium Negara, Malaysia.
A plaque of silver decorating the ends of bolsters and cushions, the origins of the muka bantal (literally ‘face of a pillow’) are unclear, but foliate and geometric motifs on early specimens suggest that it was initially a custom of the Malay nobility. By the early 19th century, it had been adopted by the Peranakan Chinese as they assimilated Malay cultural norms, the elaborate silverwork reflecting the taste for high refinement shared by both communities.
