A plaque of silver to decorate the ends of cushions on seats and beds, the origins of the muka bantal (literally face of a pillow) are unclear, but foliate and geometric motifs on early specimens suggest that it was initially a custom of the Malay nobility.

By the early 19th century, it had been adopted by the Peranakan Chinese as they assimilated Malay cultural norms, the elaborate silverwork reflecting the taste for high refinement shared by both communities.

The muka bantal featured on this card is a pewter replica of the original in silver in the collection of the Muzium Negara, Malaysia.
