A tea lovers’ novelty, tea pets are unglazed clay objects, nurtured or ‘raised’ by leftover brew being poured over it, the aim of which is to imbue the pet with the scent of tea. Tranquility’s tea pet, a pewter macaque monkey cradling a peach in Yixing clay, alludes to the tale in Chinese mythology of the Monkey King’s infamous theft of the peaches of immortality.
