Sugumaran Devar
Manager, The Café
Man of Meal
Sugu runs The Café at Royal Selangor's Visitor Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
“A cheerful smile almost always puts anyone at easy. Also, a quick pair of hands to bring food & drink over also helps.” Sugu quips.
He has always been a restaurateur. Before The Café, Sugu cut his teeth at cafés and restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. However, he wanted to work in a place where “everyone knew everybody’s name”.
“When I found out that Royal Selangor was advertising for someone to run the café, I felt excited! I told my mum about it and she encouraged me to go for it,” Sugu reminisces.
As it turned out, Sugu’s mum had worked at the visitor centre before. She told him of her many happy moments there.
“Mum was a guide at the visitor centre in the 1990s. Seeing so many happy faces as she takes them on guided tours gave her a lot of satisfaction. She especially loved helping families take photos at the Giant Tankard. And also, her fellow guides who had become her friends,” says Sugu.
In 2015, he became The Café manager and Royal Selangor’s most familiar face.
“When I started working here, I felt awkward and uncertain of my role. But when I saw so many visitors and staff dining in, I felt inspired to give the best experience to visitors,” Sugu reminisces with a smile.
“My job is about delighting customers. I love to recommend the best food pairings and it makes me very happy to see the satisfaction on my customers’ faces. People come for our cakes which we make ourselves. Our iconic raspberry cheesecake has a fruity jelly, crunchy biscuit base which goes really well with espresso. Then we have our very Malaysian Pandan Gula Melaka cake.
Fans really love the delicate floral notes of the screwpine leaves and the slightly smoky caramel sweetness of palm sugar. It pairs nicely with long black.
Our daily lunch specials are our bestsellers. Our chef heads out at the crack of dawn to buy fresh produce to make them. And we have a different menu every day, every week. My personal favourite is Nasi Lemak, Malaysia’s much-loved national dish. It consists of coconut-flavoured rice with delicious chicken curry made with our own special recipe!” Explains Sugu.
There’s nothing like a mouth-watering meal and a friendly face to help you relax. Come lunchtime, mild-mannered Sugu transforms into a man on a mission, determined to make his diners happy with good hospitality and delicious food. Royal Selangor is grateful for our everyday superheroes going that extra mile.
