Muniandy Murugan and Ganeswaran Dewadas
Pewtersmiths, Manufacturing Department
Metal Men
Muniandy joined Royal Selangor in 1984. He came to Kuala Lumpur from Sungkai, a town in the state of Perak, when his friend asked him to try his luck at Royal Selangor factory. This avid football fan started out casting molten pewter in moulds, before they are shaped into finished products.
“When I first started, it was quite challenging because working with molten pewter can be tricky. You have to pour it in fast enough, so the mould is completely filled before it has a chance to cool. It’s a race against time! But, through perseverance and guidance from my superiors and colleagues, I started to do better. I always want to ensure that I do a good job,” says Muniandy with a grin.
Today, he supervises and mentors a team of smiths at the casting section of the factory.
Muniandy and his team work closely with Ganeswaran, who turns tin, copper and antimony into pewter alloy. Royal Selangor alloys its own pewter so that quality and consistency can be maintained.
Ganeswaran says, “I truly enjoy what I do here because it is the very first process in creating pewter products. It involves focus, precision and skill. The process follows the strict formulae set by the Research & Development Department. The pewter we alloy has to be strong and yet malleable enough so our fellow artisans can craft and turn it into beautiful products. We use different alloys for different applications and products.”
“When we see Royal Selangor products in the media and retail stores, we feel very proud because we are a part of the team that makes them,” says both Muniandy and Ganeswaran.
Royal Selangor salutes both men for their diligence and passion in creating high quality pewter which makes beautiful designs possible.
