Joo Dee is Royal Selangor’s company secretary. She ensures the company complies with statutory and legal requirements.
She joined Royal Selangor’s Finance Department as a stenographer, fresh out of Stamford College Secretary School, back in 1982.
“Royal Selangor was like a family to me back then and still is. I come from the state of Kedah way north of Kuala Lumpur. Although my family was far, I was not lonely because my colleagues were the closest thing to family here.”
“I have been here long enough that people naturally gravitate towards me for information. If a staff member does not know the answer to something, they will look for me. I am happy to help new employees and share my experiences with them.”
As the businesses grew, statutory requirements became more complex and as such, systems and procedures became more sophisticated. Digitisation of processes was also an added challenge, but these challenges did not stop Joo Dee from taking on new skills. "Every day is a learning process", she says. She completed her training to become a chartered company secretary and grew into her new role very quickly.
"Now my responsibility has expanded to protecting the company’s intellectual property and keeping up with the latest statutory requirements not just in Malaysia, but in countries where Royal Selangor is located. I’m also the first point of contact for the new managers. On their first day, I want everyone to feel at home and familiarise them with the facilities. I also answer their questions and help them out on their taxes and pensions," she adds.
