Senbagam Seevanatham
Senior Supervisor, Royal Selangor Visitor Centre
Gift of the Gab
Sen is an avid Tamil movie buff. She joined Royal Selangor in 1996, fresh out of school and now takes care of both the Comyns and Selberan stores at the Visitor Centre, where she meets guests from all over the world.
"Our products come with interesting design stories and our customers like that," explains Sen.
She was first stationed at Starhill Gallery, then rotated between stores in Kuala Lumpur before ending up at the visitor centre.
" like talking to people, so approaching customers is something I enjoy doing. My mentor Carol, really helped me refine my technique by giving feedback and encouragement," explains Sen.
What she loves about the job is the opportunity to speak different languages every day. Like most Malaysians, she speaks Malay and English and her language at home is Tamil. Now that she is based at the Visitor Centre, she has picked up conversational Japanese and Chinese.
“I’ve always thought that if I knew more languages, I could make more friends. I learnt by listening to my customers and colleagues talking. Then I try it out with colleagues who will give me feedback on my pronunciation.
When I speak in Chinese or Japanese to our customers, it makes the interaction more meaningful for them. Making customers feel comfortable by speaking their language is my way of engaging with them,” explains Sen.
For her, language learning is a living process that takes place every day. With multilingual speakers like Sen, Royal Selangor is able to share its unique story of design and craftsmanship with people from all over the world.
