Don and Nazri
Pewtersmiths, Manufacturing Department
Future at Hand
Don & Nazri do many things together. They went to the same school as kids. They both love listening to indie music and indulging in delicious mamak-style food. Today, they work at Royal Selangor as lead assemblers for BE@RBRICK, a collaboration with MEDICOM TOY. Before being chosen to work on these collectible figurines, both Don and Nazri were taught the art of pewtersmithing by Zainal, their senior. Since then, they have created a style of their own. Their passion for pewter crafting is matched by a deep appreciation for Malaysian design.
“Working with pewter means learning the basics well, being patient, persistent and creative. It’s a lot like playing music. You learn the chords and practice. Then you’re able to play something that is your own,” says Nazri, an avid guitarist whose favourites include The Beatles and contemporary indie pieces.
"As Malaysia is made up of many different cultures, it is a rich source of inspiration and local pride. The products we create are enriched by designs from local arts and crafts such as batik and songket fabric,” explains both Don and Nazri proudly.
Work has its ups and downs and having a friend around makes a difference.
“We’ve known since we were small school kids. So, we’re comfortable with each other. We meet for lunch and talk, share ideas and experiences,” says Don.
Nazri adds, “I love being here because everyone is open to ideas and is willing to embrace change. Aside from that, I get to work on something cool like BE@RBRICK.”
“I feel a sense of accomplishment when I see my work out there, admired by BE@RBRICK fans everywhere....and even on Hypebeast!” adds Don.
Royal Selangor pays tribute to young artisans who enrich a 135-year old heritage with their spirit and passion for the craft.
