Suppaiya and Mugesh
Lead Polisher and Machinist, Manufacturing
Like Father like Son
Suppaiya started as a housekeeper in 1980. Today he is tasked with overseeing the polishing and buffing of pewter items on the factory floor.
“Work is difficult at first but it gets easy with experience. I have good bosses who are humble and approachable. I consider Royal Selangor to be the best company to work for. So, I have an obligation to work hard. This is something I instil in my son.” explains Suppaiya.
Mugesh, his son, joined the company at his father’s recommendation in 2013, as a smith
“When my dad told me there was a vacancy, I took the chance to join the company,” says Mugesh.
Like his father, he is also known for his strong work ethic. Through self-study, training, discipline, Mugesh became an expert Computer Numerical Control (CNC), machinist. 2020 marks his 7th year in Royal Selangor.
“Ramesh, my mentor at work, introduced me to operating the lathes at Royal Selangor. He taught me how to set up machines for daily production. When our supervisor, Bala, gave me the opportunity to learn about CNC, I was apprehensive at first. After all, the products we produce are very valuable and mistakes are few and far between! Ultimately, it was my father who encouraged me to take up the challenge. Now I know the machine well and I develop my own methods of resolving issues. Even my supervisor refers to me when he is stuck,” says Mugesh proudly.
"When I go to the retail store, I feel excited to see the things that I have helped make on display and show them to my wife and my friends.” he adds.
Mugesh continues on to say “I work hard so I don’t disappoint my dad. I am happy when his colleagues tell him that I do good work. When I first started, I rode to work with my dad. Today, my dad and I ride to work separately. I bought my very first motorbike, got married and became a father, all during my time with Royal Selangor.”
Suppaiya looks at Mugesh affectionately and remarks, “When my colleagues compliment me on my son’s work, I feel a sense of pride. I'm very proud of my son.”
Fathers are role models who selflessly encourage and inspire their children to be the best version of themselves. When Mugesh decided to follow in Suppaiya’s footsteps, it became the best tribute he could ever receive as a father.
Royal Selangor celebrates all fathers who work tirelessly to provide for their families, and helped build a legacy of design and craftsmanship that has lasted 135 years.
