This ornate sculpture is orientalism at its most extravagant. Featuring the supremely auspicious dragon, symbol of good luck, happiness and prosperity, the creature is depicted flying over waves emblematic of the imperial court, against a backdrop of clouds, which represent luck and good fortune. Before the dragon hovers a flaming pearl, a customary companion motif representing wisdom.
The entire object is sculpted in high relief and lavishly gilded with 2K gold, with the dragon’s eyes picked out in faceted red stones. A couplet honouring the dragon appears on the reverse.
盛世逢云龍 翻飛凌九天 Amidst billowing clouds the Dragon Dances in the Ninth Heaven, In its glory bestows upon the world Prosperity and Magnificence.
