Attaining lengths of 1.8m and tipping the scales at 500kg, the leatherback sea turtle Dermochelys coriacea is the largest of all living species. It has changed little since prehistoric times, and is easily identified by its prominently ridged back and streamlined shape.
The beaches of Rantau Abang in Terengganu, on peninsular Malaysia’s east coast, once hosted the world’s largest nesting population of around 10,000 nests a year. Despite nesting having been effectively eradicated due to human consumption of eggs, a handful of these magnificent animals still return to the beach to lay.
Our brilliant polish pewter sculpture depicts a proud giant, posed as it glides effortlessly through the oceans.
