The exuberant depiction of a pair of peafowl amongst a profusion of flowers and leaves on a 13th to 14th century black lacquer plate becomes an equally lively medallion of sculpted pewter set into the dark wood lid of a keepsake container.
Based on a carved black lacquer plate in eight-petal peony shape with twin peacock motif; Yuan to early Ming dynasty (13th to 14th century)
