Centred on the Malay peninsula and the Kingdom of Siam, and stretching from the Arabian Sea to the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, the exquisite details of Edward Wells’ A New Map of the East Indies are etched on satin finish pewter. The plaque’s criss-cross style frame features floral roundels in pewter at the intersections.
Published in Oxford in 1700, the map is in the collection of Malaysia’s Muzium Negara.
A clergyman and an advocate for education, Edward Wells (1667-1727) published profusely. This map is one of 22 Wells dedicated to Prince William, Duke of Gloucester (1689-1700).
