Depicted in a classic asana or pose, a contemplative Guan Yin sits in the lotus position, her robes flowing softly around her. She is adorned with a single necklace and an image of the Buddha on her high chignon, her downcast eyes symbolising a continued watch over the world.

The sculpture radiates a meditative calm, the elegant drapery, expressive rockwork and serene expression demonstrating Xu Xiao Yong’s masterful skills.

Known as the Goddess of Mercy in English, Guan Yin is revered throughout East Asia as the embodiment of infinite compassion. The name Guan Yin 观音, meaning ‘one who perceives sounds’, is itself an abbreviation of Guanshiyin 观世音 ‘one who perceives the sounds of the world’ i.e. one who hears the world’s cries for help.
