Representing the universe in microcosm in the tradition-steeped artform of wayang kulit or shadow puppet theatre, perhaps no prop is considered more important than the fan-shaped pohon beringin or Tree of Life. It appears at the beginning of a performance to awaken the cosmos in which the story unfolds, and returns at the end, bringing the tale to its conclusion.
