Xu Xiao Yong’s dramatic Vermilion Phoenix appears to defy gravity. Masterfully sculpted, and cast in fine pewter, the bird sweeps its powerful wings down to lift it higher, displaying the grace and elegance of its luxuriant plumage as it rises with vigor.

Guardian of the south, the phoenix symbolises summer, midday, and the element of fire, resurrecting itself in flames much like its western counterpart. It is representative of steadfastness and virtue, and is considered a lodestone of advantageous opportunities and favourable commercial outcomes.
